The Rowan Division II (D-II) Men’s Ice Hockey team wins, 5-4, in a shootout against Montclair University’s D-II Men’s Ice Hockey team at Hollydell Ice Arena in Glassboro, New Jersey.
In the shootout, junior forward Max Findley and freshman defenseman Justin Zapata buried two goals to secure Rowan a win. The Profs picked up its second win in its second game of the season.
Junior goalie Aidan Young made two crucial saves in the shootout, as well as in the game to help.
“Here and there we have some bad plays or stuff like that, but goalies are the last line of defense,” said Young. “So I gotta keep that mindset.”
Before the shootout, the Redhawks scored four unanswered goals.
“As a goalie, I’ll be honest with you, you forget about it right away,” said Young. “I mean, it goes in; it’s like a nothing-nothing game every time. It doesn’t matter if it’s seven-nothing for the other team.”
On the coaching side, Dom Guido picked up his first win as a coach for the Profs, as head coach Brien Bennett was away for this game.
“It’s awesome, really proud to be a part of this team,” said Guido. “It’s a new experience for myself. Love this group, and I’m ready to grow with them.”
But for Rowan, penalty trouble hurt.
“Keep more heads, and worry about the game,” said Guido. “Anything out of our control, you’re not able to change that. Only thing you can control is your emotions, your effort, your attitude. Anything else, that’s not worth worrying about.
A couple of the penalties Rowan took were heavy, one being a five-minute major to junior forward Brian Bowman, who was ejected from the game. Last year Bowman totaled 28 points in 29 games.
Sophomore forward Riley Capecci almost got ejected, as the referees sent him off. But Capecci was called back and was not ejected, something that doesn’t happen often.
“It wasn’t anything too serious, just some confusion, lack of communication between us and the refs,” said Guido. “We lost Bowman; he’s a part of our team.”
Sophomore forward Dimitry Thompson would score the third goal of the game. Over the offseason, Thompson made the transition from defense to winger.
“I was always more forward-oriented, I would skate with the puck a lot,” said Thompson. “Seeing my offensive chances I could’ve brought to the team, they [the coaches] decided to move me up to the forward.”
The Profs will be right back at Hollydell, where they will take on TCNJ, a D-I team that Rowan defeated last week, 7-3.
