The Rowan Men’s Division II Ice Hockey team wins, 2-1, against the University of Maryland Men’s D-II Ice Hockey team, at the Hollydell Ice Arena, in Glassboro, New Jersey.
After losing the previous day away against the Terrapins, 3-0, the Profs get a much needed win.
Forward Justin Zapata put the Profs ahead two in the second period with just 52 seconds left to go.
Zapata put away his own rebound, grabbing his second goal of the season.
Zapata, who at the very start of the season, and up until this game, played defenseman. But made the switch back to being a forward.
“I’ve played forward my whole life, first year coming here I wanted to switch up to defense, try something else, but forward’s natural to me,” said Zapata. “So, it felt normal.”
Sophomore Matthew Carabasi notched the first goal of the game, at the beginning of the second period, off of a rush.
During the final minutes of the game, a timeout was taken, as the Terrapins were looking for an equalizer.
“Just catching our breath, making sure that we know our jobs,” said head coach Brien Bennett. “I thought we were good down the stretch.”
Sophomore goalie Bobby Kennedy picked up his first home win of the season, along with making some important saves.
“It feels great, we wanted the one yesterday, get a little bit of revenge, but we got the one today, and that’s all that matters,” said Kennedy.
Last week, Rowan took multiple trips to the box in both games against High Point University. This week, against Maryland, the Profs took just two penalties.
“There’s gonna be some emotions tied to that, but you just gotta keep in mind that emotion is a tool, and it’s one of the oldest sayings in the book,” said Bennett. “You gotta play with emotion, but you can’t let emotion play with you.”
Rowan will take a break this week, but will be right back against one of its rivals in Rider University, with an away game on Oct. 16, and a home game the following day.
